A response to the shooting death of Alex Pretti by ICE agents on January 24th.

Dear Church,
The Way of Jesus is inherently the way of protest, because those following Jesus are always called to stand against empires, tyrants, oppressors, and any government or individual using violence or power as a means of control. Although his mission was not to overthrow Rome, Jesus clearly invited people to stand for and help usher in a new kind of kin-dom: one which chose inclusion over exclusion, love over hate, compassion over apathy, and peace over violence. It was an invitation that would put Jesus, along with his followers, in a dangerous position. For anytime you oppose the powers that be, offering a uniquely beautiful alternative to their vision of domination, the powers will respond in the only way they know how. With violence.
So how did Empire and Religion react to Jesus' protest of love, along with all those standing with him? Naturally, they killed them. And they still do today…
